Welcome to Hazel Class

Hazel Class is a class of year 5 and 6 children.  Our teachers are Mrs Fenton and Ms Ouston.

Our topic this term is 'Old Portsmouth'  We have already located Portsmouth on OS maps and written a route to get there from East Meon using 6 figure gird references.   We have studied aerial maps and photographs to compare the features of both East Meon and Old Portsmouth.  We are very much looking forward to our trip to Old Portsmouth after half term, where we hope to carry out traffic surveys and find out why people visit the area.

Old Porstmouth

We are really enjoying out Old Portsmouth topic this term.  Last Friday we completed a computing workshop at school with the Winchester Science Centre.  We started the morning by writing programmes and procedures to control different outputs on a control box.  We enjoyed finding our way around a virtual town and controlling the crossing and lights too.  In the afternoon we build Knex fairground models, based on those at Southsea, and wrote more complex programmes and procedures to control them.  Some of our models turned in different directions, at different speeds and some even had flashing lights!

After a treasure hunt of physical and human features in Old Portsmouth, using aerial photographs and maps, we finally visited the area itself on Friday.   Although it was a wet day we enjoyed our walk along the promenade and were lucky enough to see a Royal Navy ship, as well as Ben Ainslie's racing boat! By the end of the morning, we were experts at locating our position on a map and marking key features along our route. We spent some time completing a survey of traffic in and out of the harbour - we were surprised at how busy the harbour was.

With all the information we collect and with a little more research back at school, we hope to design and create a website about Old Portsmouth and the surrounding area. We will add the links to our class pages once they are complete.

Hazel Class had a fantastic week at Fairthorne Manor.  They used all their keys to success to work as a team, overcome fears and have fun!
